Cal Tjader Goes Latin
(Album/Cover Design)

Design and typeset an album cover (LP record pocket) for a band/musician of my choosing. I chose Bossa Nova artist Cal Tjader and decided to modernise his 1959 album ‘Cal Tjader Goes Latin’. The research process involved understanding Tjader’s music style and visual codes of the Bossa Nova music genre. This project was created in Adobe Photoshop and InDesign.

The album cover design was created in Photoshop, InDesign was used to add the typography (e.g. songs, inside sleeve text). The main type featured on the front cover, is called ‘Bossa Nova’ designed by Arthur W. Presser.

This is the original 'Cal Tjader Goes Latin' (1959) album cover design.

Bossa Nova (Descriptive Words/Visual Codes):

  • Vibrant, energetic, full of life.

  • Exciting, fast paced.

  • Bright colours giving positive energy.

  • Musical symbols and Brazilian cultural imagery.

  • Bold expressive fonts.

  • Letter in different colours, creating pattern/repetition.

  • Artistic , textured of backgrounds often with abstract and irregular shapes

  • Very flat forms, no tonal qualities.
